This paper explains the definition of an Income Tax Exempt Charity (ITEC), and provides some data on the number and purpose of ITECs in Australia, including breakdown by state, purpose of ITEC, and whether the ITEC is in an urban or rural area. Amongst the findings:
- There were just over 48,000 Income Tax Exempt Charities in Australia as at November 2005
- The distribution of ITECs’ main offices throughout the states consistent is with the population density
- ITECs often had activities in more than one area.
- Over forty percent of ITECs indicated a main purpose of education.
- Just over a third of ITECs indicate a main purpose of religion.
- One fifth of ITECs operated in the fields of disability, aged persons, young persons and health.
- 67% of ITECs were founded since 1975
