The National Youth Commission Inquiry into Youth Homelessness was an independent enquiry funded by The Caledonia Foundation.
Among the report's findings:
- Homelessness for young Australians aged 12-18 has doubled to 22,000 in the past 20 years
- At least 36,000 people under 25 are homeless on any given night
The report provides a Roadmap for Youth Homelessness which highlights ten strategic action areas, as follows:
- Develop and implement a National Framework and National Homelessness Action Plan
- Affordable housing for young people
- Refocus service provision on building and resourcing ‘communities of services’
- Prevent homelessness by supporting ‘at-risk’ families
- Resource early intervention for at risk young people
- A new national approach for the care and protection of children in all states and territories
- Ensure supported accommodation is accessible in all communities
- Redevelop employment, D&A and mental health programs for homeless young people
- A new form of youth housing which links housing to education, training and employment programs
- Post-vention support
