Part of the Federal Government's New Social Inclusion Agenda, the Australian Compact is currently in planning stages. The Compact would be an agreement between the Government and the not-for-profit sector that outlines how the two will work together to strengthen their relationship. The Compact could also be a platform for discussion between the government and the sector about the best way to achieve objectives to benefit the community.

Some possible inclusions for the compact are:

  • a statement of mutual roles and responsibilities
  • plans for sustainability of the sector
  • frameworks for dialogue and policy development
  • collaboration on industry issues
  • regulatory reform.

The Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) is consulting to seek the initial views of community organisations and users of community services about the potential of an Australian Compact.
