This report prepared for Alzheimer's Australia and part funded by the Wicking Trust examines the current and potential impact of the dementia epidemic on health care and social costs. It projects the increase in disease burden up to 2023 and the potential rise in direct cost to the health and care systems.

The report calls for more research funding for dementia and makes recommendations for research and service delivery.

Among the report's findings:

  • In 2007 there were an estimated 220,050 people with dementia, a figure which is projected to rise to 465,460 by 2030.
  • Dementia is the chronic condition that is projected to show the greatest increase in disease burden by 2023.
  • Economic modelling has shown that if the onset of dementia could be delayed by 5 years there would be significant savings to the health and care system.
