Australian Rural Leadership Foundation
The Australian Rural Leadership Foundation, and the Australian Rural Leadership Program (ARLP), grew from discussions held among Board members of the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation in 1991 and 1992. On 3 September 1992, against a backdrop of increasing challenges for rural Australia, the Foundation was incorporated to conduct and administer the ARLP. The Foundation is a non-profit, public company limited by guarantee and has recently been endorsed as a deductible gift recipient.
The overall goal of the Foundation is to improve the economic, social and environmental well-being of rural, regional and remote Australia — its industries, communities and people — through investment in leadership development. It does this by exposing participants of its programs to real issues critical to rural Australia through interaction with key people in industry, government and community, in both Australia and overseas. It seeks to challenge participants to build on the skills and knowledge they have and the networks critical to effective leadership.
The challenges facing those living and working in rural, regional and remote areas are immense, ever changing and on the increase. The survival and viability of many communities and industries within these regions is constantly under threat and effective leaders are essential to their continuing success and growth.
