Council on Foundations
The Council on Foundations (COF) is a membership organization of more than 2,000 grantmaking foundations and giving programs worldwide. It provides leadership expertise, legal information and networking opportunities, as well as other services, to its members and to the general public.
The Council on Foundations is a publicly supported, nonprofit corporation organized under the laws of New York. It is a membership organization providing a wide variety of services primarily for endowed, grantmaking organizations throughout the United States and in foreign countries. The Council is exempt from tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and has received a ruling from the IRS that it is not a private foundation. The purposes of the Council are exclusively charitable and educational and are aimed at promoting, encouraging and enhancing the public good through private giving.
The Council on Foundations was established as the National Committee on Foundations and Trusts for Community Welfare in 1949, chaired by leading steel executive Edward L. Ryerson. In 1957 the organisation became the National Council on Community Foundations and was officially incorporated; in 1958 it opened affiliate membership to private and company foundations, and commenced full-time operations with a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation.
In 1964, full, voting membership was opened to family and corporate foundations; accordingly, the organisation changed its name to the Council on Foundations, Inc.
