The Nelson Meers Foundation was the first Prescribed Private Fund to commence operations in Australia. Mr Nelson Meers AO is a lawyer and former Lord Mayor of Sydney. He founded the Nelson Meers Foundation in 2001 to provide greater opportunities for Australia's cultural organisations.
The Nelson Meers Foundation's purpose is to foster innovative artistic and cultural expression by encouraging and supporting projects and organisations that advance the visual, performing and literary arts in Australia, or that seek to utilise the arts to create positive social change.
The Nelson Meers Foundation aims to fulfil Mr Meers' commitment to the principle that artistic and cultural endeavours are essential to an open, enlightened democracy, and the Foundation funds projects that promote individual wellbeing, community sustainability and cultural tolerance.
In 2005, the Nelson Meers Foundation won the AbaF Philanthropy Leadership Award.
