Climate Change Overview
Climate change has been defined as any long-term significant change in the 'average weather' that a given region experiences. In recent usage, especially in the context of environmental policy, the term "climate change" often refers to changes in modern climate, particularly global warming, due to anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations. (Definitions sourced from Wikipedia). It is the projected impacts of this rise in global temperatures - health, environmental, agricultural and economic impacts, among others - that pose huge challenges for government, business and social sectors.
Grantmakers need to understand the threats posed by climate change across the board. While the scale and complexity of the problems are imposing, the potential impacts cross fields in which philanthropy is active and engaged, for example health and wellbeing, and are likely to have increased significance for the disadvantaged, particularly the those in poverty, Indigenous, and rural and remote communities.
