This paper is produced by the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research at The Australian National University. It explores potential opportunities and costs of linkages between philanthropic bodies, non-government organisations (NGOs), Indigenous organisations and the academy.
The paper begins with an overview of the development of the ‘Literacy for Life’ project, provided as a case study. It also discusses the nature of philanthropy in Australia today and major changes afoot in the sector internationally. The paper goes on to provide some examples of where philanthropic funding has been ued to support Indigenous initiatives, and then suggests potential reasons why Australian development focused NGOs have remained somewhat unengaged with Indigenous issues and communities in Australia.
