Swinburne Philanthropy Alumni (SPA) was created in 2005 by a group of students from the Asia-Pacific Centre for Philanthropy & Social Investment (APCPSI).

Established in 2001, the APCPSI provides formal post-graduate education focused on philanthropy, fundraising and social entrepreneurship. It continues to attract a wide variety of students including experienced personal, foundation, corporate and public grant-makers, advisors and potential new-entrants to PSI.

Apart from the extensive formal curriculum, the learning environment at the Centre provides students with a unique opportunity to offer, exchange and debate both old and new ideas in philanthropy; in a context that is larger than their own day-to-day involvement. Many say this contributes greatly to their philanthropic development.

SPA was born spurred by a desire to continue that sense of openness and enquiry. On 11th November 2005 (a date to remember) SPA became an incorporated association and established the SPA Trust (a sub-fund at the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation). The trust was set up with the long-term aim of allowing SPA members to practice grantmaking within a diverse but supportive team environment. After setting up Principles and Guidelines, SPA distributed its first grants in 2007. As at 30th June 2011 the fund corpus had grown to be in excess of $64,000, providing for a distribution this year of just under $4,000.

The SPA committee consists of both current and past students including a PhD and four Masters. SPA’s logo was designed by a team of students at the Swinburne Design Centre and the motto “Change through Knowledge” succinctly expresses our commitment to using the inherent power of knowledge to make a long-term difference.

The current members of SPA look forward to working with each new cohort of students in the APCSIP post graduate programs and to sharing and learning from their passion for philanthropy.
