McCracken warns against taking "best practices" as the only standard against which to base funding decisions, pointing out that acceptance of the status quo can disrupt the traditional foundation activity of funding innovation. She examines the fact that there is no commonly accepted definition of "best practices" in the foundation world, and posits some suggestions for thinking outside the box.
