As is the case with so many aspects of life in Australia, our philanthropic habits find themselves shaped by an indeterminate blend of English and North American influences.

This article was first published in Australian Philanthropy - Issue 67: Looking Back, Looking Forward: Celebrating 30 Years of Philanthropy Australia. It focuses on the role private philanthropy has played in Australian culture, suggests some reasons why philanthropy is less conspicuous in Australia than in the US, and examines changes that have taken place in the Australian philanthropic landscape over the past few decades.
