The WA Aboriginal Child Health Survey is a comprehensive survey of Aboriginal children aged 0-17 years in Western Australia. The result of a five-year planning process and two years in the field, the survey provides a comprehensive snapshot og the health, development and wellbeing of Aboriginal children in their families, schools and communities. Information was collected from over 5,200 children throughout urban, suburban, rural and remote Western Australia, and interviews were conducted with 2000 families, as well as with teachers, principals and Aboriginal communities and agencies.
The study was designed to build a bas of knowledge which could feed into the development of preventive strategies to promote and maintain the wellbeing of Aboriginal children. It also identifies the factors which promote resilience in Aboriginal children.
The study consists of five volumes, four of which are complete and can be downloaded in full or chapter by chapter. Regional profiles are also available.
- Volume One - overview of physical health of Aboriginal children and young people
- Volume Two - on mental health and social and emotional wellbeing issues
- Volume Three - explores factors that impact on the educational outcomes of Aboriginal children and young people
- Volume Four - examines the circumstances of Aboriginal children, families and communities based on their level of relative isolation
Volume Five, which is currently under consideration, will examine how justice outcomes are influenced by health, education, family, community and other broader social issues.
