Philanthropy Australia members joined Andrew Muirhead and Christine Edwards, the CEOs of Lloyds' TSB Foundation for Scotland and Myer Family Philanthropy respectively, for a facilitated discussion about being an effective philanthropic foundation.

The Lloyds' TSB Foundation for Scotland is a grantmaking trust that distributes in excess of GBP £6 million per annum to charities throughout Scotland. The majority of the Foundation's funding is distributed through its Standard Grants scheme which focuses on local charities working at grassroots levels. However, the Foundation has also added some other very interesting funding streams to its repertoire including: capacity building grants; a structured leverage program focusing on vulnerable children and young people affected by substance misuse; and overseas funding. The Foundation also devotes resources to reaching out to target groups to inform them of the funding opportunities available from the Foundation and assisting appropriate groups to make their applications.

Myer Family Philanthropy (incorporating The Myer Foundation and the Sidney Myer Fund) based in Melbourne, is one of the largest non-government funders in Australia . Following a significant review of its funding program MFP has recently implemented a new funding strategy that is intended to provide a stronger focus on achieving change. This new model has been created through a commitment to several principles: strategic impact; responsiveness to community issues; and family engagement.
